History Of Wxii,Wxii 12 News:WXII-TV (digital funnel 31, virtual funnel 12), the NBC television station licensed to Greensboro-High Point-Winston-Salem, North Carolina (Piedmont Triad) Designated market area. She is licensed to Winston-Salem and is also at present held by Hearst Corporation. Its transmitter is situated on the mountain in Sauratown Stokes County, North Carolina. Stations carried on cable funnel 11 in most of the market.
The station began operation on Sept. 30, 1953 WSJS-TV. This may be the 3rd oldest station in North Carolina, WBTV in Charlotte and Greensboro, WFMY-TV. The station initially held subsidiary of Piedmont Publishing, editors of Winston-Salem journal and Twin city Sentinel, together with WSJS radio (600 AM and FM 104,1, at present WTQR), and Hollywood star Mary Pickford and her husband Buddy Rogers.

Johnny Beckman, earlier employee, recalled functioning on WSJS-TV in those earlier years.

The station has always been linked to NBC. ABC may be created to WFMY WGHP signed in 1963. The station first broadcast from the basement studio WSJS on Spruce road in Winston-Salem. The first broadcast was the first video game of globe series between the new York Yankees and Brooklyn Dodgers.

The station originally broadcast from an antenna close to Kernersville. The tower was moved to the Sauratown Mountains in 1955.

When Piedmont Publishing was marketed to mass media general in 1968, Gordon Gray, the longtime publisher of equally newspapers, held on WSJS-AM-FM-TV broadcasting like a triangle. Gray also been given a company for cable system of the city. Nevertheless, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has ruled that television stations could not also personal cable methods in their markets. Gray, therefore, forced to sell WSJS-TV in 1972 to mass media Inc, who renamed the station WXII-TV. Multimedia areas WXII and WFBC-TV in Greenville, South Carolina (now WYFF) in the Pulitzer in 1983 in trade for KSD-TV in St. Louis (now KSDK). When Pulitzer bowed away from broadcasting in 1997, Hearst bought the whole group, including WXII.
