Edgar Valdez Villareal “La Barbie” Captured in Mexico
A suspected drug lord and Texas-born fugitive known as “La Barbie” (the Barbie) has been captured in Mexico. La Barbie, whose real name is Edgar Valdez Villareal was a Texas high school football player who entered the world of drugs and started rising in the ranks of the organizations. In Mexico, his arrest is part of President Felipe Calderon’s war on drugs, while on the USA Valdez is wanted for smuggling tons of cocaine. La Barbie has also been suspected responsible on a drug cartel war that included many violent acts in a fight to gain control of the Beltran Leyva cartel. Valdez was captured on Monday and today he was shown to the press wearing the same clothes he had on his arrest. The effort to catch Valdez lasted for almost a year, he was called by Calderon “one of the most-wanted criminals in Mexico and abroad”. They really could make progress on the case after the death of his boss Arturo Beltran Leyva. His U.S. lawyer, Kent Schaffer, said “This has been going on for quite a while. They raided several of his homes. They detained his girlfriend’s mother at one of his homes about three weeks ago, so you figure it’s just a matter of a time.” And added: “He was born and raised in Texas. His family’s here. There’s no Mexican citizenship at all, Mexico may not be so eager to hand him over, but it would be the smartest thing for Mexico to do politically.”
