North Carolina:Hurricane Earl Edges Closer To North Carolina

President Barack Obama has ordered federal agencies to help North Carolina, as Hurricane Earl edges closer towards the coast.
The Category Four hurricane is packing winds of up to 145 miles per hour.

Earl is expected to reach the North Carolina coast by late today or early tomorrow.

Hurricane watches and warnings are in effect from North Carolina to Delaware.

Residents have begun boarding up homes and business in the wake of a mandatory evacuation order for Hatteras Island on the Outer Banks. Tourists have mainly left the islands, but some locals are preparing to ride out the storm.

The governors of North Carolina, Virginia, and Maryland have all declared states of emergency.

NASA has released a bird eye's view of the storm from space.

A tropical storm warning has been issued for the coast of Long Island. City beaches are likely to see dangerous rip currents through Saturday.

The hurricane is threatening to disrupt travel for the start of the Labor Day weekend.

Several airlines are waiving fees for passengers who would prefer to reschedule their trip rather than fly during the storm. The carriers include Continental, Delta, U.S. Airways, Air Tran and Frontier.

Continental Airlines expects Newark Airport to be hit hard with travel delays and cancellations.

John F. Kennedy and LaGuardia will likely see slower arrivals and departures because of the wind gusts late tomorrow.
