Roddick:Roddick admits his argument with referee got out of hand
FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y. -- Andy Roddick admitted, in retrospect, that he carried on too long over a disputed foot fault call during his second-round loss to Janko Tipsarevic late Wednesday night.
Although he never threatened the lineswoman, as Serena Williams did a year earlier, Roddick mocked the official, made a ``Call 1-800-Rent-a-Ref'' joke, and wouldn't let it go for nearly 10 minutes.
``In hindsight, did I let it go too far? Yeah, probably,'' Roddick said. ``I probably let it get to me more than it should have.''
Replays showed Roddick had, in fact, committed a foot fault. His complaint was that the ref said it was with his right foot, when it was his left.
``I expect my umpires to know the left foot from the right foot,'' he said.
Roddick, who had been rather flat until that moment, got a boost of energy at that point, but it was too late.
Tipsarevic tried his best to ignore the drama.
``He was [ticked] off, and I would be, too, but I feel he was trying to do something to change the match and get the crowd involved,'' he said. ``I was telling myself, `Just don't look at him. He's in his own world, nervous, whatever. Just focus on what you need to do.' ''
Asked whether he thought Roddick could win another Grand Slam title, he said: ``He needs to be more aggressive. But yes, I think he can. He needs to change his game style a little bit, in my opinion, going for a little bit more, especially from his forehand.''
Tipsarevic also explained why he buried his head into Roddick's chest at the net after the match. Roddick had just complimented him, and joked ``If you lose early now, I'll kill you.''
Tipsarevic appreciated the sportsmanship.
``He's a very nice guy,'' the Serb said of Roddick. ``To say those nice things after probably being really, really disappointed, losing against an underdog on your stadium in front of your home crowd, it was emotional. I wanted to hug him, but it probably wouldn't be so good.''
IN THE RANKINGS
Serena Williams, sidelined after foot surgery, will hold onto the No. 1 world ranking unless Carolina Wozniacki or Jelena Jankovic win the U.S. Open. If Williams stays No. 1, she will have spent 119 weeks atop the rankings, sixth place behind Steffi Graf (377 weeks), Martina Navratilova (332), Chris Evert (260), Martina Hingis (209) and Monica Seles (178).
• Frenchman Arnaud Clement, at 32 the oldest man in the draw, advanced to the third round when Eduardo Schwank of Argentina retired with Clement leading 6-3, 5-5.
