Gumby Suits Used by Mariner Energy Employees
Today we had an oil rig explosion take over the headlines of media around the USA. In this incident 13 workers had to jump to the sea as a result of the platform explosion and luckily none of them died. Among the safety measures they had was the use of a safety suit, called a gumby suit. Gumby suits act as a measure of protection for workers in oil rigs that not only protects them physically but also helps them if they need rescue. They are made of bright colors such as orange or red with reflective strips on the extremities. The suits are manufactured using fire-retardant neoprene and they also have air bubbles that help workers float in the sea. Finally they keep water away. As you can see the suits can mean some times the difference between life and death. Luckily today all workers were able to be put to safety pretty quickly thanks to the quick action by the U.S. Coast Guard.
