USC football: Lane Kiffin seeking a special star
USC football: Lane Kiffin seeking a special star. When he became USC coach — and then had the chance to hire John Baxter — Lane Kiffin had a vision for the Trojans’ special teams:
He wanted them to perform “the way we did on offense and defense before.”
“Before” refers to his first go-round at USC, when the Trojans were spectacular on both sides of the ball, winning five Pac-10 crowns in Kiffin’s six seasons as an assistant.
But they seldom were more than above average in the kicking and return games under Pete Carroll. If that doesn’t change under Kiffin and Baxter, it’ll be an upset.
From the time spent working on it to the personnel being deployed, USC has approached special teams with the utmost seriousness. Expect to see an immediate difference in tonight’s opener at Hawaii.
“We’re going to play well on special teams,” Kiffin vowed. “We’re going to dedicate our time and energy and resources.”
