Papua Nueva Guinea Earthquake, Tsunami Warning Canceled

Two strong earthquakes have shaken today the island of New Britain, New Guinea. As a result of strong earthquake, seismologists said it could be a danger of a tsunami hitting the island. The tsunami warning for Indonesia has been canceled.

The first earthquake hit New England at 11:04 pm local time and had a magnitude of 7.2 on the Richter scale, while the second was half an hour later, at 11:35 pm with the same magnitude 7 2 according to the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency of Indonesia. According to the USGS, the second quake was 6.8 magnitude.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or building damage, but is expected to change once we have the full report on the earthquake. The USGS has stated that "in general, the population in this region resides in structures that are vulnerable to earthquake shaking, though some resistant structures exist."
