Vaginal gel may reduce HIV infections
That is what a vaginal gel containing the drug Viread may reduce HIV infections, if the results of a trial in South Africa serve as a guide. Viread, made by Gilead Sciences of Foster City, now part of several drugs for patients newly diagnosed with AIDS, but the gel could be a breakthrough in the prevention front. The success rate - a measure against women who used a placebo gel - was lower for those who apply less than 80 percent of the time. See story on D2.
